In 2017 a group of engaged government officials, members of the medical community, law enforcement, and local residents initiated the Leelanau County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. OUR VISION: Leelanau County is a healthy, safe, and knowledgeable community OUR MISSION: To prevent and reduce substance misuse and prioritize behavioral health through community engagement, research, and education.

The MIchigan Department of Health and Human Services offers many assistance programs for individuals in need such as: Medical, Food Assistance, Cash Assistance, Child Daycare, State Emergency Relief, Children’s Services, Adult Services and Foster Parenting.

MSU Extension provides tools to help parents and caregivers get children ready for school and promote social and emotional health in young children.

The Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center is the only nationally accredited poison control center serving all residents in the state of Michigan. Specialists in Poison Information can be reached around the clock and every day of the year by calling 1-800-222-1222. Board-certified clinical toxicologists are available to consult with healthcare providers caring for poisoned patients who are being cared for in medical facilities in Michigan. Community education outreach services and resources are available by request on our website or by calling the Poison Helpline.

PTA is the oldest and largest child advocacy association in America, comprised of over 24,000 local PTAs and nearly 4 million members. As part of this nationwide network, parents have a voice in decisions that impact children in their individual schools, and at the district, state and national levels.

This Michigan Child Protection Registry is a do-not-contact service that families can easily and quickly sign up for at in order to keep their children safe while on their devices at school and at home. This Registry, which is administered through Michigan’s Secretary of State office, is a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching our kids through e-mail, text, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram. This Registry is an excellent resource for making sure our kids aren’t being served ads for alcohol, tobacco/vaping, online gambling, pornography or marijuana.

The Leelanau County Family Court Diversion/Prevention Program is a support program for Leelanau County youth, 17 years or younger, who may be at risk for involvement with the juvenile justice system. Prevention programs utilize a Risk and Protective factor model in addressing issues while promoting positive youth development. Diversion is a referral program that allows certain first-time offenders accused of non-violent crimes an alternative to formal court involvement.

MICARES guides and supports providers through the Practice Pathway program for the Addiction Medicine sub-specialty and develop addiction medicine didactics for UME & CME.

Jamie Daniels Foundation grants funds to support community partners that provide programs, resources, and solutions that address the ongoing drug epidemic in our country. The foundation also advocates for legislative change as it relates to drug use and prescribing. Our primary focus is on children, young adults (up to age 24), and their families who are battling Substance Use Disorder through three key initiatives: Prevention, Recovery, and Stigma Reduction.
