Advanced Substance Misuse Prevention Professionals Community of Practice

Substance misuse prevention professionals with 6+years of experience in the field working in HHS Region 5 (IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI) are invited to apply to participate in a four-session Community of Practice (CoP). This CoP is designed for experienced substance misuse prevention professionals who are seeking space for advanced-level dialogue, strategic reflection, and peer consultation.

The goal of this Community of Practice is to provide an intimate and interactive forum for seasoned prevention practitioners to explore complex and emerging issues impacting prevention systems, leadership, and workforce development.

Participants will attend virtual sessions from 11:00 AM–12:15 PM CT (12:00–1:15 PM ET) on the following dates:

  • June 16
  • July 7
  • July 28
  • August 18

The first session will include structured content to establish shared framing and direction for the group. Subsequent sessions will be participant-driven, with topics identified collaboratively to ensure discussions reflect real-time priorities, challenges, and opportunities facing prevention leaders across the region.

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must meet the following criteria to participate in this Community of Practice:

  • Currently working in the substance misuse prevention field in HHS Region 5 – IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. (Applicants from outside the region will be placed on a waitlist and accepted if space is available.)
  • At least 6 years of experience working in substance misuse prevention
  • Serving in a leadership role (e.g., director, supervisor, coalition lead, senior prevention specialist) or possessing substantial experience in substance misuse prevention practice
  • Ability to attend all virtual sessions via Zoom with camera on and a working microphone (75 minutes each)
  • Willingness to actively engage in discussion, peer consultation, and collaborative topic generation

EXPECTATIONS:

Participants of the Community of Practice will:

  • Attend all four virtual sessions (75 minutes each)
  • Complete homework between sessions (approximately 15 minutes per homework assignment)
  • Actively contribute to group dialogue and shared problem-solving
  • Identify priority topics and emerging issues to guide future session discussions
  • Engage respectfully and thoughtfully in advanced-level conversations about prevention practice and leadership

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By participating in this Community of Practice, participants will:

  • Analyze complex and emerging issues impacting prevention systems and leadership
  • Engage in peer consultation to strengthen decision-making and problem-solving approaches
  • Identify innovative strategies to enhance prevention impact within their communities and organizations
  • Strengthen professional networks among experienced prevention leaders across HHS Region 5

CERTIFICATES:

Registrants who fully attend this event or training will receive a certificate of attendance via email within two weeks after the event or training.
